Amazeing disgrace – Chap. 6, Act 4, Strip 46

Oh, Mopey, Mopey, Mopey…usually I have nothing but praise for your reasoning, but every now and then you’re almost startingly naive about things. You applied logic to an engineering issue. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

It’s true that engineers talk about logic, but that’s some kind of code they have. The mode of thinking they apply to thing like, say, the design of an airduct system is so fundatmentally alien that no word created by a human mind could properly describe it. That’s why they use ‘logic’ as a shorthand.

But while scientists like Mopey will never be able to follow the mental meanderings of engineers (or the meanderings of their airducts), B-movie scriptwriters often get it right on the first try – because their mental processes seem to be similarly chaotic. Thus, while Mopey is right that airducts are normally a safe and efficient way of traveling in B-movies, when it comes to their size and complexity, they’re pretty much like a box of chocolates – you never know what you get.*

So, in real life as well as in fiction, a small complex of buildings can have an extensive and complicated system of airducts. Mopey is, fortunately, stuck in a fiction – for while she could get lost forever in such a maze of pipes in real life, in fiction she’s guaranteed to still make her way through in time to do whatever the plot next requires her to do.

More on Thurs…uh, Monday!

*But check the bottom of the box of chocolates – usually, they actually do show you what you’ll get. Don’t bother with the airduct system, though. They usually don’t have anything on the bottom, and it’s pretty hard to turn them upside down without making a mess.
