Daydream believer – Chap. 5, Act 2, Strip 14

I feel so incredibly accomplished and proud of myself, right now. Mopey has been wearing her nun outfit since Thursday’s strip, and I’ve successfully abstained from making a “habit” joke until now. That’s four days! Or one update, if you look at it that way…or one panel, actually more like. But still – achievement!

Professor Chronometricos, in the meantime, has quickly figured out the little problem with the time machine’s capability to mimic a period-typical building: even period-typical buildings, even small ones, don’t usually pop up without some noticeable construction effort going of for a non-trivial amount of time. People tend to notice things like that.

On the other hand, people used to believe in miracles for a long time, so if the time machine uses the right type of building, it should still not cause any undue alarm. Well, at least not for laid-back people like our Renaissance sharecroper here, who has let nothing disturbe his persistent and pointless hacking away at the same piece of ground for what must have been hours. I’m not sure whether I want that read as a comment on the state of development of agriculture in Renaissance Italy, the intellectual limits of this particular peasant, or the fact that extras hired to act the part of manual laborers always tend to do that.

As for the other time machine, it couldn’t really hide its Cossack roots. All Ukrainian buildings were this type of felt hat. I haven’t verified that, but I’m reasonably sure of it, because it would be funny.

More on Thursday.
