The 2,000 Humiliations Stare – Chapter 9, Act 2, Strip 61

“I have been driven many times upon my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had no where else to go.”Abraham Lincoln

From a certain viewpoint, Snuka and Abe Lincoln do share some commonalities…although Lincoln was known as “Honest Abe” and Snuka is widely known as “lying scoundrel”, so there are a few serious points of non-commonality, as well.

But, yeah – Snuka is not nearly as badly afflicted by this defeat and horrendous humiliation as any of the other team-members, simply because defeats and horrendous humiliations are a near-constant feature of his life, and have been for a long time. If he let that kind of thing get him down, he’d never spend any time actually being up.

The eyes Snuka is ‘wearing’ are taken from Thomas Lea’s picture “The 2,000 Yard Stare”, of course…I’m not sure how well that reads, or if it just looks like Snuka had his eyes opened uncharacteristically wide while wearing a domino mask. Which, admittedly, would be a perfectly appropriate article of clothing for Snuka in particular, but that wasn’t my intention here.

More on Thursday.

  1. Now THERE’S an unexpected benefit to being Snuka that I never considered…

I’m uncertain I can call it emotional resiliance, necessarily, but a sort of indifference to defeats and setbacks beneath a certain threshold of extremity feels useful. Mind you, what he had to live through to get to this point is unfortunate (For him) but still… losing to bread not phasing him is handy for this moment.

Gouda, on the other hand… he may have a stronger emotional reaction to losing to gouda… again… giving past trauma(s).

    1. Yeah, getting beaten down frequently helps you develop a certain level of, let’s call it numbness, which considerably lessens the blow of new blows…and while it certainly beats feeling every blow intensely, I’m still not sure whether I should really be categorized as something like a boon or advantage.

Snuka, however, will never truly resign himself…the amount of damage he’s absorbing on an ongoing basis is tremendous, but he is designed with an irrepressible streak of optimism. A deep conviction that, if he just keeps playing dirty, some day he has to be on the winning side…where all the other people who play dirty are. XD
