The Delusions of von Mopeydorff – Chapter 9, Act 1, Strip 51

The one where Mopey finds a whole new way of victimizing Snuka, if only mentally. Although he kinda brought it on himself – if he knew about those inclinations of Mopey’s friends, and their influence on Mopey, why did he say something as suggestive as “imagine a clash of lightsabers”? That’s basically entrapment. And, anyway, I tried to keep the depiction of Mopey’s fantasy as harmless as the circumstances would allow – left to her own devices (or delusions), she’d probably have fantasized something that Snuka would have found much more objectionable.

But Gregory is making a great choice in prioritizing finding a coach now. He’s obviously learning from his own experiences at the hands of the Professor: when faced with responsibility, trick somebody else into assuming it in your stead. A coach with problem-solving skills would be appreciated, but one who just has making-problems-their-own skills would help Gregory immeasurably already. And making-problems-your-own skills are a basic requirement for coaches.

But where to find one? Snuka’s former master would really not be a good choice. Even aside from any wrong ideas it might give Mopey, Obi Wan Kenobi has an atrocious record when it comes to coaching people. XD With him at the helm the whole team might turn to the dark side, and lose many limbs in the process. Even more than they might otherwise lose, I mean.

More on Monday.

  1. They do have a rogue’s gallery of megalomaniacal world-conquerors they could probably sucker into a leadership role. The only real difference between a sport and world domination is scope (also that sports have rules but those really never matter in anime).

    1. Yeah, that’s spot on – and I’m going to make that very point in Monday’s strip, actually. XD

As for rules in sports anime, it really runs the gamut – there are some out there that are actually quite scrupulous about that, but most allow themselves a little leeway where it serves the plot…and some really just don’t give a damn. And this chapter is bound to fall into that third category…I’d have a hard time duly considering the rules of cricket, since I don’t actually have any idea about them. XD
