And with this, the first act is finally officially beginning – after a record-long and meandering prologue. Which was, however, quite necessary to connect the preceding chapter to this one. Which, I guess, I could have avoided if I had bothered to at least sketch this one out before finishing the earlier one…oh, well.
The act begins with a very, very familiar setting, and I decided to let the first few establishing shots pass by without any narration. I’ve already used the “Between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis…” bit in the prologue, and ultimately there’s really not a lot new to say.
Save for the fact that Lillytown has a high-school. Unsurprisingly. And that said high-school looks oddly similar to the Japanadian high-school the team attended for a very short while in the last chapter. Also unsurprisingly, but for different (and more cynical) reasons.
Snuka, for one, seems to still recall some of his experiences from back then, though – or perhaps he was aware of that stereotype just from watching anime. I have no idea, frankly, how he spends his free time. What is clear is that he is aware that running late on the first day of school, and running on the way to school, with a piece of toast held in your mouth, is the classic set-up for colliding with a random person that will then turn out to become your love-interest.
But, for reasons yet to be revealed, he can’t afford the time to pursue romance (or have romance pursue him) right now, so he makes his way to school in an extra careful and inconspicuous manner. Staying close to the ground, there’s minimal risk anybody could bump into him. At most, somebody could stumble on him while he’s crawling along the sidewalk…and there’s no risk of love at first sight with that kind of introduction.
More on Monday.
Or by just eating a bread right away. If you bump into someone while you DON’T have a bread in your mouth, it doesn’t count.
That’s true, but it’s an ancient tradition to keep the slice of toast between your teeth like that the whole way to school. Snuka knows it doesn’t make sense, but he’s hesitant to violate any ancient traditions – with the kind of bad luck he’s having on a constant basis, he can’t risk an additional curse on top of it. XD
