Devil Wears Prada – Chapter 9, Act 2, Strip 20

Yeah, of course. Let’s make the gay guy crossdress. Was there any way this would end up with anything more subtle than this? >_>

Barely, I guess. In addition to the fact that the crayon drawings in the dossier provided by Akane’s sister very clearly documented that Youichi is attracted to sailor outfits, there’s the fact that Mopey and her best friends are fujoshi, so they’re attracted to the idea of guys wearing female uniforms on the general principle of the matter.

You can’t really blame much of this on Akane’s sister, her dossier mostly just provided some (thin) cover for Mopey and Co. to do what they would probably have done under any circumstances. Just remember that Maid (and Miko) Cafe. Same thing. >_>

Getting Hiroki into the outfit was done ‘the usual way’, so I didn’t bother to illustrate it. It involved a complex plan to make sure Hiroki was using the communal showers after everyone else had left, then exchanging his clothes with the female uniform, leaving him only a choice between crossdressing and nudity for his way out of the building. To make absolutely sure he made the right choice, there was also an envelope with some cash that said “this is for you if you crossdress”. It never hurts to make sure.

More on Monday.

  1. Heh… don’t put on the girl’s uniform. Create a makeshift loincloth out of the top and go shirtless–I doubt anyone will complain, if we’re doing standard anime bodies. XD

    1. Clever, but Catch 22: The school rules require all pupils to wear school uniforms. The male uniform and the female uniform are the only two outfits allowed to be worn, so if he doesn’t want to break the rules, Hiroki has no choice. =P

  2. …Ok, on one hand, speaking from experience, there’s guys into this sorta thing. And he’s got the hips to pull the outfit off. Points for Hiroki there.

On the other hand, this is at risk of setting bad precedent for Hiroki… his first appearance was playing up his homosexuality for laughs at his and Snuka’s expense… and this scenario is starting to risk morphing into an 80ies and early 90ies anime “let’s make the male characters dress up like women for comedy value” trope. Like with Gourry Gabriev in Slayers acting like an over-the-top stereotype of a fancy noble lady that one time in Slayers to infiltrate an all-women installation. Hiroki could end up becoming nothing more than a gay guy whose gayness is exploited for lazy comedy relief. *Sighs* Like Kanji in Persona 4.

Then again, on the third hand I apparently have, that’s actually pretty fitting for a B-movie to do if that’s the direction this is going, so points to the author there.

Liked the comic, I’m going to go see a doctor about this worrying third hand thing now…

    1. Yeah, I’m definitely aware of the issue…on the one hand, the sequence needs to play to stereotypes, since it’s a., a parody and b., Mopey and friends are fujoshi and thus have a seriously skewed idea of gay relationships. On the other hand, of course I don’t want it to become demeaning. And on the third hand, I fully well know that subtlety isn’t my strong suit. (Don’t worry about the third hand thing, by the way. As you can see, I’ve got one, as well. And my semi-half-cousin Zaphod even has three hands and two heads, and he’s fine. Well, to a degree.)
So…I’m not entirely confident I’m handling this great, but in the long run Hiroki is scheduled to redeem himself and his relationship with Youichi…
