But I guess that’s a valuable life lesson: if somebody tells you that they made sure of something…do consider the possibility that they actually just felt sufficiently sure of it to not bother with any actual checking. >_>
And if you feel the impulse of saying something like that to yourself…do consider the possibility that you’re lying to yourself and dig through your memory for any signs that you really did the checking.
In Latho’s defense, if the plot hands the idiot ball to the villain…and all but a select few plots do that sooner or later…the villain is more or less required to run with it as far as feet will carry. And in that situation, it’s probably still somewhat more dignified to seem self-deceiving, rather than outright stupid. So that’s the route Latho takes.
And, yeah, the predictable consequences of his own mistakes appear to haunt Latho, as was inevitable, and he reacts with an appropriate amount of shock and dismay. Which, I think, works much better with his new, re-designed face than with his old, plushy one.
