I’ve saved you the details of our friend’s triumph over their first miniboss – as was to be expected, they mastered the challenge with but few wobbles. After all, this is still the part of their adventure where challenges can be easily tailored to match their capacities for dealing with them – because they haven’t yet had a chance to mess up their characters with horrible development mistakes. >_> That’ll come later, I’m sure of it.
On the other hand, they don’t seem to be fully conscious of their own rank and station yet. When a petty errand is offered to them, they decline – apparently envisioning themselves as something different than errand boys. Which basically amounts to arrogance, given that they’re Lvl. 1 characters, for whom petty errands should be love and life. >_>
And DM had tried to do everything right, too. Offering money, downplaying the risks, using a friendly, harmless and trustworthy appearance – check, check and check. And it’s not like the party mistrusted him…I mean, they could have, given how flagging down random strangers to pay them huge sums to transport messages over short distances doesn’t sound like a sustainable way to organize a society’s postal service…they just didn’t realize he was addressing them at all.
He’ll have to find some other way to direct them toward whatever low-level sidequest he wants to send them on…but he probably will. He’s an experienced DM, after all, and this probably isn’t the first really dense party he has had to deal with. >_> DMs have subtle tricks to encourage cooperation with their agendas, and usually also an operational reserve of some more, less subtle ones.
